Read-alouds make children learn to love books. It instills in children the motivation to be life-long readers. There is nothing that I love more that to share a good book with the littles. This week, I had the opportunity of combining a read-aloud with a craft and excitement was in the air. The letter of the week was C and the “C is for Caterpillar – A Letter C Craft” activity was just the right activity to get students to practice the hard C letter sound, review counting, patterns, and even a little science with the butterfly lifecycle. There’s nothing I love more than a cross-curricular activity.
It All Starts With A Very Hungry Caterpillar
I put on my purple caterpillar antennae, grabbed my book, and called my little ones to the get close to the computer screen (distance/virtual learning). Reading this book is always so exciting because it is so colorful. I drew my students in with the pictures, we counted all the food the very hungry caterpillar ate. We discussed a little of the lifecycle of a butterfly. We talked about the words that start with the letter C. On the picture above, we talked about cake, candy, and cupcake (chocolate and cheese were also there but I didn’t emphasize it because I was working with the hard c sound).
A Letter C Craft
This letter C craft is very simple and so much fun! I pre-printed yellow cardstock with a huge letter C and the phrase “C is for Caterpillar” (or you can have the kids write their own big letter c and the phrase). We created a color pattern using the pompoms that we glued to form the letter C. I reviewed the circle and line shapes to draw the head, eyes, and antennae.
