Hi, Teachers! Are you struggling to teach about ocean biomes? The solution: create an edible ocean biome.
I love to travel so there is nothing that I love more than to teach my students all about the world around them. How are students going to learn about these places if they have never visited these places? The perfect opportunity for me comes every year when I teach about Earth’s biomes. According to Merriam-Webster, biomes are major types of ecological communities. It is basically teaching about the different areas on Earth and the animals that live there. Specific animals live in different biomes because they have adapted to live in those different environments. There are eight major land biomes and two major water biomes (salt water and fresh water).
One of my favorite lessons is teaching about the salt water biome. The ocean biome can be so exciting, but many teachers struggle to make abstract learning concrete. My students get excited about learning when I bring the ocean to them. How can we do that? I have found that using edible activities to teach science concepts is always a major success and the highlight of the week. Who doesn’t love learning with food? We all do!
Here are the step-by-step instructions to create an edible ocean biome.
Creating an Edible Ocean Biome – Materials:
These ingredients to create an edible ocean biome are per student.
1 Tablespoon of Blue Colored Frosting
2 to 3 Goldfish crackers
Instructions:
Steps:
- Start with a lesson on ocean biomes and sea life. I use this powerpoint.
- Distribute a plastic knife, a paper plate and a few paper towels per student.
- Walk around placing two graham crackers, one tablespoon of frosting on each students’ plate, two or three goldfish crackers, and a few sprinkles.
- Instruct students to turn the graham cracker vertically and spread the blue frosting to about half of the cracker.
- Then, students should crush about 1/8 of a graham cracker and place at the bottom of the graham cracker to create the ocean floor.
- Next, students should place the goldfish crackers on the “ocean” frosting and press down.
- The white pearl sprinkles should be used above the fish as bubbles.
- The students can then decorate their cookies with fish sprinkles to add more “sea life” to their edibles biomes.
- Last, but not least, enjoy!
Your students will enjoy and remember ocean biomes forever!
Did you try this activity? Let me know how it went or send me pictures (with no student faces, please!).
